Even before becoming incorporated, Cass Township had a schoolhouse in Primrose. Over the years, abandoned coal company homes, engine houses and at least one log cabin served as schools, too. W.W. Munsell and Co.’s 1881 History of Schuylkill County, Pa. says one early teacher “wielded the birch” and another “educated but eccentric” teacher “taught by day and studied the stars by night.” By 1881, a school built in Heckscherville held 150 pupils.
The former Cass Township High School is remembered for its 1957 football team, which was undefeated and unscored upon.
