Statistics

Cass Township’s road system is comprised of 26.80 miles of roadway. 14 miles of the total are Township roads, and the remaining 12.80 miles are state highways (see below for a breakdown of road listings).

Background

A two-person full-time Road Department maintains the 14 miles of Township roads and related infrastructure. The Department’s primary responsibilities consist of repairing roads, installing and maintaining drainage systems, winter maintenance – i.e. plowing/treating Township roads, maintaining Township parks and equipment, as well as the municipal building.

Right-of-Way

Every Township road has a right-of-way – a legal right of passage over another person's ground and the strip of land over which a public road is built. The right-of-way exists from the center line of the road, and varies in length, depending on the width of the road. Although it is the Township's right-of-way, the property owner is responsible for its maintenance and upkeep.

A property owner cannot build or plant anything on a right-of-way. A property owner must contact the Township office when installing, repairing, or altering a driveway that sits on or crosses a Township right-of-way.

Winter Maintenance

During the winter season, the Cass Township Road Department will make every effort to keep the Township roadways open, treated, and passable. However, there will be instances when the rate of snowfall, ice, and/or wind will make it difficult. In those cases, plowing may be suspended until such weather conditions improve enough to continue treating roads.

Residents are asked to wait until plowing is completed before clearing your driveways and sidewalks. In most cases, roads are initially plowed to keep one car way open. Also, the main arteries and Fire Companies are plowed first, then the side streets. The plower(s) will return after the storm subsides to widen all roads, open the inlets, and allow for future snow events. This can lead to the blocking of the property owner’s driveways and sidewalks.

The Township stresses that residents remove their vehicles off Township roads and alleys during snow/ice events. This will allow for a more efficient and effective snow/ice removal.
